Local artist, picture book author and illustrator Jeni Chen will lead art activities to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. In this workshop, you will hear the legend of the Great Race and make a puppet that represents your Chinese zodiac animal using paper collage. You will play with colours, lines and shapes to represent the unique characteristics of your Chinese zodiac sign. Finally, everyone can participate in a puppet show to tell your own version of the Great Race story. You can take the puppet home and have the option to make it into a card for Lunar New Year.

*Being fully vaccinated is considered 14 days after your 2nd Dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine. Proof of Vaccination for those 12+ will be required to gain entry into the workshop. Those 18+ will be asked to show ID and your proof of vaccination will be checked with the BC Card Verifier App. ID verification is not required for Children 5 – 11, but vaccination is strongly recommended. Those who are not eligible for a shot can attend if accompanied by guardians who are fully vaccinated.

About the Artist

Jeni Chen is a visual artist, picture book author and illustrator. She was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Canada with her family when she was a teenager. Jeni has always loved to draw but stopped when she grew up. It wasn’t until Jeni became a mom that she was inspired to draw again. Jeni returned to school and obtained a fine art certificate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Finding her creative voice has led her to create public art installations and illustrate for children. Her debut picture book Emet’s Box is being published by the Little Press, to be released in spring 2022. And for fun, Jeni draws a webcomic series about family life with her elementary-school-age son. You can find out more on her website JeniChen.com.
